Chemical Sensitivity and Perfumes

Why Perfume May Be Causing You Health Problemswoman-with-perfume

Perfumes are in everything we use today. You can find perfumes to wear and perfumes in your toilet paper. It is very hard to find anything without perfume. So, what happens if you have sensitivity to perfumes or fragrance in products? Luckily, there are many perfume-free products for you to use in the all-natural world.

Perfumes are fragrances developed in a laboratory settings and made of several different chemicals. These fragrances can cause allergy-like symptoms, even though they are not allergies, but irritants. Irritation can cause some of the same symptoms as allergies.

Here are a list of fragrance sensitivity symptoms:

  • Watery Eyes
  • Headaches
  • Sneezing
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Tightening in the Chest
  • Worsening of asthma symptoms
  • Runny and Stuffy Nose
  • Skin allergy/rash

Obviously, people with asthma may have worsened symptoms. Also, people with allergies are more susceptible to fragrance sensitivity. So, that is a lot of people that are at risk. What kind of treatments are out there?

Treatments

The best treatment for reduction of symptoms is to avoid fragrances as much as possible. There are unscented versions of many products. Some of these products include lotions, creams, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, and soaps. However, this would be in an ideal world. Obviously, you can’t control what others are wearing and if you are in confined spaces these issues will be exacerbated. Nasal antihistamines are also something that can help if you are bombarded by these outside fragrant torpedoes. There are also air purifiers for small work spaces that can clean the air of impurities and fragrances. Small mini fans can also direct the smells and fragrances out of your immediate area and keep you in a pleasant environment that keeps your nose happy.

There are many great options out there for you in the all-natural and fragrance-free world. Vermont Soap makes an organic aloe castile soap that is fragrance-free. Even better is that it is also all-natural without any of the harmful chemicals present like parabens, phthalates, or detergents. Indigo Wild’s Wee has an all-natural laundry detergent without harsh chemicals and no synthetic fragrances. It uses the fragrance of essential oils to enhance the smell of the product. Essential oils are natural in the fragrance department and do not have issues in the fragrance sensitivities department.

Pristine Beauty has a line of beauty products that are all-natural and only have fragrance that is derived from essential oils. Their personal care line includes shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair repair serums, and even sunless tanners. Instead of using candles and air fresheners to improve the smell of your home, consider using essential oils to keep your home smelling fresh and clean.
Fragrances are amazing in small doses and if they are derived from natural sources, like essential oils they are safe from fragrance irritation. Controlling the fragrances you allow in your home is a great way to ensure you are safe from the irritants that chemicals can bring.
